About the Artist

Gary Taxali is an internationally acclaimed contemporary artist and illustrator whose work exists at the intersection of fine art, pop culture, and vintage iconography. Born in Chandigarh, India, and raised in Toronto, Canada, Taxali developed a singular visual language rooted in Depression-era American imagery, 1930s advertising art, and the retro imagery of early American comic strips like E.C. Segar’s Popeye. His hand-drawn typography, heavily textured surfaces, and retro-inspired imagery carry a modern sensibility — work that doesn’t simply reference pop culture but creates it. His influences range from the pop art boldness of Andy Warhol, Pollock and Rothko, the luminous color fields of Richard Diebenkorn, the playful energy of Fleischer Brothers animation, the bold graphic language of the Russian Avant-Garde, and the handmade warmth of Japanese monoprints.
Taxali’s illustrations have appeared in The New Yorker, TIME Magazine, Rolling Stone, The New York Times, GQ, Esquire, and Newsweek. His clients include Sony and Converse. His fine art has been exhibited at the Norman Rockwell Museum, the Andy Warhol Museum, the Contemporary Art Museum in Rome, and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. He has been represented by Jonathan LeVine Gallery (New York), Wanrooij Gallery (Amsterdam), Antonio Colombo Arte Contemporanea (Milan), Lazarides (London), La Luz de Jesus Gallery (Los Angeles), Iguapop Gallery (Barcelona), and the Juxtapoz Clubhouse at Art Basel Miami, among others. In 2005, the Whitney Museum of American Art commissioned his now-iconic Toy Monkey collectible. Notable projects include The 1000 Journals Project at SFMOMA and Made in Polaroid at Phillips de Pury (New York). His practice also extends into sculpture, with bronze works held in the permanent collection of The National Pastime Museum. Six of his works were acquisitioned by the Library of Congress in 2018 for their permanent collection.
Taxali’s art is deeply rooted in social commentary. Works like Kamala Wave, American Gun, and All Loud on the Western Front are sharp reactions to political and cultural moments — from the U.S. presidential election and figures like Kamala Harris and Zohran Mamdani to broader issues of power, identity, and protest. Many of these works have crossed over from fine art prints into t-shirts, hoodies, flags, and collectibles, proving that the work resonates far beyond the gallery wall.
He has collaborated with many brands and integrated his art across mediums — from writing and illustrating the children’s book “This Is Silly!” published by Scholastic, to creating artist-designed silk pocket squares for Harry Rosen. He has three monographs: “I Love You, Ok?” (TeNeues), “Mono Taxali” (279 Editions), and “Happiness With A Caveat” (2017). In 2012, The Royal Canadian Mint released six Gary Taxali Special Edition 25¢ coins — the first time the Mint allowed an artist to alter the typography on legal tender. Each coin is stamped bearing his initials. Gary is a past member of the Stamp Advisory Committee for Canada Post, where he initiated stamps such as Marriage Equality and Canadian Illustrators. He was selected to represent North America by the United Nations and created artwork to raise awareness for World Hunger.
He has won hundreds of illustration and design awards including recognition from American Illustration, Communication Arts, Two Gold Medals from The Society of Illustrators (NYC), a Gold Medal from the Advertising and Design Club of Canada, a Gold Medal from The National Magazine Awards Foundation, and a nomination for a Cannes Lion. Gary created the cover art and inside illustrations for Aimee Mann’s album @#%&*! Smilers, which earned him a 2009 Grammy Award Nomination for Best Art Package.
Gary was listed as one of the top 100 illustrators in the world by art book publisher Taschen. He is tenured faculty at OCAD University in Toronto, Canada, holding the rank of full Professor.
